Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training:
I completed this specialized instruction designed to help professionals safely and effectively de-escalate crisis involving mental illness, traumatic stress, and intense emotional situations. It’s commonly used by law enforcement, security, healthcare, and first responders.
Core focus areas include:
-
De-escalation techniques: Verbal and non-verbal strategies to reduce agitation, aggression, and risk of harm.
-
Mental health awareness: Recognizing signs of mental illness, substance use disorders, and emotional distress.
-
Trauma-informed response: Understanding how trauma and PTSD affect behavior and decision-making.
-
Crisis communication: Active listening, empathy, and rapport-building under stress.
-
Safety and risk assessment: Protecting the individual, responders, and the public while minimizing use of force.
-
Collaboration and resources: Connecting individuals to mental health services and community support.
Outcomes of CIT training:
-
Reduced escalation and use of force
-
Improved safety and trust
-
More appropriate referrals to mental health care
-
Better outcomes for individuals in crisis and responders alike
